David L. Leatherby, 81, formerly of Mt Pleasant, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019 in Sacramento, CA., surrounded by his family. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1955 and then married his school sweetheart Sally Hannum. who survives. He graduated from Iowa Weslyan College and taught at Pleasant Lawn School one year before moving to California where he taught 6th grade.

A gifted athlete, Dave was a quarterback in football at Iowa Weslyan College (ranked 4th in the nation). After teaching in California he felt called to open a business that would more directly contribute to the good of the community. Having worked at his parents' Main Street Café in Mt Pleasant, he wanted to recreate that "community gathering place experience". The idea of a giant ice cream parlor was conceived and became a reality in 1982 – Leatherby's Family Creamery!

In addition to his wife Sally he is survived by 9 of 10 children and many, many, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
