Maharishi School student Atreya Dey, recently selected as an alternate Iowa delegate for the 48th annual National Youth Science Camp, will be attending the prestigious forum after all.
As one of Iowa?s most promising young scientific leaders in the 2011 high school graduating class, Dey will participate in the program following an announcement that one of the two original students selected to attend has dropped out.
Iowa?s delegates are selected from a pool of worthy applicants by the Iowa Academy of Science and Iowa Department of Education Science Consultant. The committee gives preference to students with an outstanding academic record and broad extracurricular interests who demonstrate creativity and commitment to community, and the intention to pursue a science, technology, engineering or mathematics career.
Established in 1963 as a part of West Virginia?s centennial celebration, the National Youth Science Camp is an annual summer forum where two delegates representing each state exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds. Lectures and hands-on research projects are presented by scientists from across the U.S. who work on some of the most provocative topics in science today. Delegates to the camp are challenged to explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art and music with resident staff members. Delegates also present seminars covering their own areas of research and interest
Dey will be flown to Charleston, W.V., June 30 and will return to Fairfield on July 24 after participating in the educational program. The National Youth Science Foundation, based in Charleston, W.V., covers all expenses, including travel.
Dey is the son of Mousumi and Dennis Dey of Fairfield. His extracurricular activities for 2011 include soccer, tennis and basketball. He is president of both student council and International Club and a Life Scout.
