This picture dates back to the Washington Centennial in 1939. The band is playing on an older version of the bandshell in Central Park. The band leader was Milburn McKay and the girls were Centennial girls.
The old bandstand was hexagonal and was just southwest of the fountain.
The tradition lives on. The Washington Muncipal Band will perform at 8 p.m. today in Central Park.
