FAIRFIELD — Two local tourism champions were honored with top accolades from the Iowa Travel Industry Partners (iTIP), the state’s leading association for tourism and hospitality professionals. Announced ahead of the annual iTIP meeting in Winterset on June 10, the awards shine a spotlight on rural creativity, leadership, and impact.
Adding to the local pride, Fairfield Paralympian and world record-holding archer Matt Stutzman served as the featured speaker at the event, sharing his inspirational story.
Johnny Clock Museum Wins “Only in Iowa” Award
Tucked along Highway 34 near Lockridge, the Johnny Clock Museum has received the coveted “Only in Iowa” Award, celebrating its one-of-a-kind contribution to Iowa tourism. The museum is dedicated to the legacy of John McClain, a self-taught wood-carver who handcrafted hundreds of fully functional wooden clocks using only a pocket knife and his imagination.
Each intricately carved piece tells a story of persistence, artistry, and Iowa ingenuity — drawing visitors from across the country to this humble roadside destination. Beyond honoring McClain’s life’s work, the museum helps power the tourism economy of Lockridge, Mt. Pleasant, and Fairfield, and has gained visibility thanks to promotion by Visit Fairfield and Travel Iowa.
With its modest admission and timeless charm, the Johnny Clock Museum is a tribute to small-town values and local pride. It’s not just a stop along the road — it’s a place where storytelling is etched into every detail.
Terry Baker Receives Abby Kisling Leadership Award
In addition to celebrating hidden gems, iTIP also honors exceptional individuals shaping the future of tourism in Iowa. Terry Baker, Executive Director of Visit Fairfield, has been awarded the prestigious Abby Kisling Leadership Award for her visionary and transformative leadership.
Since stepping into the role in 2020, Terry has reimagined what tourism can look like in a small rural community. Her initiatives — such as Loved by Locals, Find Yourself in Fairfield, and the Do More on 34 regional collaboration — have positioned Fairfield as a forward-thinking destination that prioritizes storytelling, technology, and connection. Under her guidance, Fairfield has seen:
A 14.7% increase in direct visitor spending (2023)
A quadrupling of social media following
The launch of signature events like Restaurant Week and the Christmas Light Showdown
Enhanced visitor tools like digital passports and curated trails
Terry’s leadership blends creativity with a deep commitment to community.
“I believe tourism is at its best when it helps people see the beauty of what’s already here,” said Baker. “We don’t need to pretend to be Napa or Nashville—Fairfield is its own kind of magic. When we show up as our real selves and add a little creative spark, it’s not just about bringing in visitors — it’s about reminding ourselves why this place is worth showing off.”
Her work continues to prove that innovation and a belief in what makes small towns special can help these communities become destinations.
