Fairfield Farmers? Market offering produce, entertainment in June

The Fairfield Farmers Market is held Wednesdays and Saturdays from May through the end of October at Howard Park. The market is open from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Vendors at the market always offer a variety of baked goods, locally made items and plants in addition to locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Some of the fruits and vegetables available in June will include spinach, asparagus, leeks, rhubarb, lettuce, strawberries, green onions, radishes, and zucchini. The second half of the month?s harvests also could include the cabbage family, carrots, peas and swiss chard.

A few vendors might also have greenhouse-grown tomatoes.

Shoppers should be sure to come prepared. Bring cash, because not all vendors are able to take credit or debit cards. Also, keep a cooler with ice in the car if buying perishable items, like eggs.

Iowa growers follow best management practices on the farm to deliver high quality, safe produce. However, make sure to practice safe food-handling practices at home. Rinse farm-fresh produce, including salad greens and melons, under running water before serving.

While browsing the vendors?s tables, shoppers also can enjoy the entertainment.

The entertainment scheduled in June includes:

? June 4, Noah?s Ark Animal Foundation is set to bring pets available for adoption to the farmers? market. Adopt applications will be available. An open mic event also is planned.

? June 11, Emily Cantafio and a jazz duet will entertain.

? June 18 features a Cooking Spotlight and open mic event.

? June 25 features another an open mic event.
