The Fairfield Public Library will host a couple of book club discussion groups over Zoom in the coming days.
On Thursday, History Roundtable will meet from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The following Thursday, Jan. 28, the Foreign Affairs Roundtable will meet from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
History Roundtable
The library's History Roundtable is hosted by John Beghtol. It's a go-to place for connecting with others and exploring diverse perspectives whether your interest is in local, national, or international history. Present whatever history book you are currently reading (even if you're in the middle of a book) and enjoy a spirited dialog. In a readers' circle, conversation inevitably covers the books presented plus other topics, so everyone walks away with inspiration for further reading. We will limit group size to 10 to ensure that everyone can be heard in the time allotted.
The library will host this event via Zoom. For the best audio and video experience, Zoom recommends downloading the latest version of their (free) app prior to login. Check the library's online calendar or call 641-472-6551 Ext. 2 for login details.
Foreign Affairs Roundtable
Beghtol will lead the discussion for the Foreign Affairs Roundtable, too, on Thursday, Jan. 28. The discussion will focus on the article 'The World China Wants: How Power Will - and Won't - Reshape Chinese Ambitions” from the January/February 2021 issues of Foreign Affairs magazine. The author is Rana Mitter, Professor of History and Politics of Modern China at the University of Oxford and author of China's Good War: How World War II is Shaping a New Nationalism.
Articles are chosen to provide significant background about a current international relations issue affecting American foreign policy. Beghtol, a former history teacher-of-the-year and member of the Academy of Political Science, serves as moderator. To ensure that everyone has time to contribute to the discussion, group size is limited to 10 people. Register for this free session by calling the front desk, and a free copy of the article will be delivered to your curbside vehicle.
