FAIRFIELD — Fairfield Public Library will soon debut a major upgrade to its library management system. Beginning Monday, July 14, the library will officially transition to Koha, a modern open-source platform used by libraries around the globe.
The change is part of a broader effort to enhance user experience and improve fiscal stewardship. According to Library Director Alecs Schmidt-Mickunas, the City will save more than $15,000 annually in software licensing and support costs with Koha. Schmidt-Mickunas remarks, “Koha was developed in New Zealand as the world’s first open-source integrated library system. Its open-source development allows the support vendor ByWater Solutions to maintain lower costs. It’s one of few platforms built by librarians rather than software developers and this shows in the kinds of advanced tools built into the system.”
Koha will replace both the library’s public digital catalog and the internal tools used by staff to manage circulation, cataloging, and other key functions. Patrons can expect a more intuitive interface when browsing for materials, placing holds, or managing their accounts online. “There’s now a shopping cart button in the top right corner of the catalog where patrons can drop items they’re interested in — It’s a modern take on the library catalog.” says Schmidt-Mickunas. Additionally, borrowers now have the option of seeing all of their checkout history when they log into their account — a feature patrons have been requesting for years.
To prepare for the system migration, the library will be closed on Saturday, July 12. While no checkouts or hold requests will be possible that day, library staff will be available by phone to answer questions and offer limited technical support. Digital resources such as Libby will remain available during the closure.
As part of the transition, patrons should be aware of some important updates. First, Beginning July 14, borrower PINs will change to the last four digits of the library card number. This PIN will serve as the login credential for online services, including Libby. Additionally, Digital platforms such as Kanopy, Hoopla, and Libby may experience brief outages during the week of July 14 as the new system comes online. Staff are available to assist with login issues or other questions. Patrons may reach out by emailing circ@fairfield.lib.ia.us.
“Koha is a trusted platform designed by and for libraries,” said Schmidt Mickunas. “We’re confident this upgrade will make it easier for Fairfield residents to access the information and materials they need, both in-person and online.” The library appreciates the public’s patience during this transition and looks forward to unveiling a smoother, more accessible experience for all users.
