FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Community School District invites community members to become licensed school bus drivers through a streamlined training program that covers most of the required costs.
The district is offering Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) in partnership with certified district staff. The cost to complete the full ELDT process is $1,051 per person, but the district will cover a significant portion to reduce the financial burden on interested applicants. For those who already hold a CDL A or B license, the cost drops to $500.
“We recognize how important it is to have reliable, well-trained bus drivers, and we want to make this opportunity accessible for people who are ready to step up and serve their community,” said Director of Operations Matt Tyler. “This course offers a streamlined and convenient path to certification, with training on our own buses. Because it is held at our facility, it also reduces travel time and expenses. Safety is our top priority, and good drivers are essential. We are committed to investing in the people who are ready to take on this vital role.”
To begin ELDT, participants must first obtain a CDL permit by passing written tests at the licensing bureau. The training includes 17 hours of online coursework with a test, three hours of in-person instruction, and 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training with district transportation staff. Once complete, applicants will take the final CDL B exam in Ottumwa, which includes school bus and passenger endorsements. The training process takes approximately four days.
Interested applicants should apply at the Bus Barn and contact the Transportation Office at 641-472-5252 with questions.
