MOUNT PLEASANT ? The Fairfield boys? tennis team completed a season sweep of rival Mount Pleasant with a 6-3 victory Thursday afternoon.
The Southeast Conference rivals split the singles matches, but Fairfield won all three doubles matches to claim their fourth victory of the season. The Trojans won their previous meeting in Fairfield 5-4.
Fairfield freshman Govi Punj continued his hot streak with a huge 8-1 win over senior Caleb Zimmerman at No. 1 singles, and Sean Soupiset beat Chase Higginbotham 8-4 at No. 2. Matt Burnstedt also won 8-4 at No. 5.
Punj and Soupiset made it a two-win day with an 8-0 victory in No. 1 doubles, while the No. 3 doubles team of Burnstedt and Matt McCan won 8-4.
The victory of the day, according to head coach Bill Sheppard, was in No. 2 doubles, however. Tommy Price and Kevin Thorn needed extra time to win the match 9-7.
?The second doubles win was particularly impressive as Tommy Price and Kevin Thorn won the final two games after a seesaw battle in windy conditions,? said Sheppard.
In JV competition, seniors Isaac Schloss and Mukund Martin both posted wins.
Next up for Fairfield (4-1-1) is a Tuesday home matchup vs. Fort Madison.
