Washington FFA members recently had the opportunity to attend and compete in the Southeast Iowa FFA District Soil Judging Contest. The contest was held at the Muscatine Community College on Sept. 27. The FFA Chapter had a team that consisted of four members: which were Gabe Greiner, son of Shaun and Heather Greiner; Natally Guzman, daughter of Alberto and Carmen Guzman; David Hora, son of Bryan and Theresa Hora; and Karlton Skuba,l son of Dave and Karoline Skubal. These members competed individually: Collin Greiner, son of Brant and Amy Greiner; John Sands, son of Jake and Katie Sands; Blake Hartzler, son of Drew and Teri Hartzler; Aaron Vittetoe son of Don and Alicia Vittetoe; and Cole Dallmeyer and Kyle Dallmeyer, sons of Curt and Jan Dallmeyer. Kartlon Skubal placed fourth overall in the knowledge test out of almost 150 other students. Gabe Greiner scored in the top 20 percent of students for overall combined score.
Soil judging is an FFA career development event that requires students to evaluate soil sites for properties that affect potential uses of the soil. Students determine land uses and restrictions for the different sites and are graded based on their decisions compared to those of a soil scientist. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
