Sunday will be the last time Fairfield High School?s seniors walk across Trojan Stadium as members of the student body.
FHS graduation will commence at 2 p.m. that day in the stadium, if weather permits. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be in the school?s gymnasium.
Senior Dakota Andersen will address his classmates and the audience as the featured student speaker. Also delivering speeches are English and language arts instructor Scott Slechta and school board president Phil Miller.
Andersen, Loreena Hucke, Suzannah Kingsbury and Shae Malloy will perform a graduation medley for the day?s special music. The FHS band will play the usual graduation tunes ?Pomp and Circumstance? and ?Fanfare and Recessional.?
FHS does not select valedictorians, though assistant principal Brian Stone will recognize the students who have earned high academic marks.
The class?s slogan is ?Together we have experienced life; separately we will pursue our dreams; forever our memories remain.? Its class colors are silver mist and black. One hundred and 19 students will graduate from FHS.
Earlier that morning, a baccalaureate service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Fairfield Friends Church. The featured speaker will be Slechta, who was named 2016 Iowa Teacher of the Year. The service will have readings from senior class members and also have music and congregational songs.
The service is open to everyone, and senior class members and family are encouraged to attend. Coordinators of this event are senior class members Abby Melcher, Joseph Wilbur and Katherine Mueller.
