FAIRFIELD - A fire occurred Monday afternoon in a dormitory at Maharishi University of Management's campus.
Nobody was injured in the fire, which was contained to one room. The building affected was Frat 150, on the corner of Granville Avenue, the north-south street that goes by the dorms, and Zimmerman Boulevard, which separates the dorms from Utopia Park.
Firefighters were called to the building at 1:03 p.m. and used water to extinguish the flames. According to a report from the Fairfield Fire Department, the fire started in a paper pile.
MUM.'s head of security, Rig Gelfand, said the cause of the fire appears to have been a candle that the occupant believed was put out.
'It looks like maybe a candle was put out but didn't go completely out, and the hot wax burned some books,” he said. 'Firefighters came quickly and put it out. We'll have to put new carpet in that room, and some of the tiles were burnt.”
Gelfand said none of the other occupants of Frat 150 will have to move out. The woman who resided in the room with the fire was given another room in the same building.
'The closest rooms on the other side of the wall are guest rooms, and no one was staying in them,” Gelfand said. 'Most of the people who live in Frat 150 are staff or in [Invincible America]. It's not a student dorm.”
