A Blessing of the Animals will be held at First United Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m., on the south lawn. If weather does not permit for outdoor services, proceedings will be held in the church garage.
Rev. Deborah Stowers, of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, will offer a blessing to any pet that is brought. Snakes may receive their blessing from afar. Pet owners who are not able to bring their pet, but can bring a representation (picture, a leash, replica, etc.) the blessing can still be offered.
The Blessing of the Animals harkens back to the life of St. Francis of Assisi, who had passion for the world and the animals God created. Although wealthy by birth, St. Francis gave up his money and position to serve God and God?s children. St. Francis had love and respect for all of life. He demonstrated love and gratitude for animals when others of his time regarded animals as only sources of work, fibers or food.
The Blessing of the Animals offers to God?s created beings honor and reminds pet owners of the responsibility they have to tend and care for the world, all its creatures and each other.
First United Methodist Church, of Mt. Pleasant, is located at 309 North Main Street.
