Fleur de Lis Club members met at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the Washington County Fairgrounds. A short business meeting was held in the Extension Office led by President Nancy Kimmel. Roll call was answered with members telling of their summer vacation plans. The secretary and treasurer reports were read by Linda Birney.
A thank-you was passed around from the family of Dorothy Jarrard. It was noted that member, Marie Hora would be celebrating her 99th birthday on July 10.
Several humorous jokes were read by the president. The group then proceeded to the round barn where Kimmel read some of the history of the polygonal barn which is a 16-sided, 40-foot-diameter building provided by the extension office. Fairboard member Jerome Vittetoe stopped by to provide some additional information on the building and workings of the barn which was dismantled in the fall of 2012, and during the summer of 2013 was reconstructed as close to the original condition as possible. The barn was originally located south of Wellman, and was originally owned by Thomas Johnson. This barn was designed to be used as a hog barn, as indicated by the 15 pens around the perimeter, and had a manure bucket which runs on a track all around the pens and moved to the outside where it is dumped into a spreader ? very unique for its time.
The group then went to the Hy Vee Deli, where dessert and conversation was enjoyed. Nancy Kimmel served as hostess for the day.
The club will vacation the months of July and August. The next meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. with Theresa Hora as hostess.
