The Fleur de Lis Club of Washington met on Nov. 21, 2019 at the home of Dorcas Jarrard. Members and guest, Kay LaMay, enjoyed a variety of breads and muffins along with fruit for refreshments served by co-hostess, Lynda Jarrard around the kitchen table. While members enjoyed their snacks, Nancy Kimmel presided over a short business meeting.
Roll call was answered with each member and guest telling of 'their Thanksgiving plans”. Linda Birney, secretary and treasurer, read the minutes of the October meeting and gave the treasurer's report. In place of a Christmas exchange, the group took up a collection to be donated to a local group. After discussion, Pat Stout made a motion to donate our collected money and to take $25 from our club treasury to add to our collection. This was seconded by Bev Krotz.
The donation will then be given to the Christian Community Outreach Center which is a homeless emergency shelter in Washington located at 604 South Iowa Avenue under the direction of Darren Brown. Correspondence was read from a prospective invite. Bev Crandall, of the card committee, will be sending a Thanksgiving card to our inactive member, Shirley Whisler, who resides at the Kalona Pleasantview Home.
Dorcas Jarrard was also in charge of the program. She provided the materials for the group to make winter candle decoration using her equipment that she uses her various craft projects she has for sale at local craft shows. She demonstrated the cutting machine called a Cricut explaining how it works and all the things this machine will do with the different mediums such as nail design vinyl, etching vinyl, cloth, and craft wood using different knife tips.
She usually has to replace this machine about every two years due to the extensive use for her craft projects. She uses Design Space and downloads it on the computer or can Blue Tooth it to the Cricut machine. Each person was given a glass holder, votive candle and then the group when through the process of taking the etching vinyl cut out from the Cricut machine and applied to transfer paper, rubbed with a stick to then transfer the design onto each side of the glass candle holder and rubbed the design onto the glass.
Dorcas made it look easier than it turned out to be for the group. She also adds vinyl designs/decals to wood blocks which she has stained and seals with Mod Podge. Check out her display at the craft shows or contact her for gift items. Each person had a winter decoration to take before departing for home.
The next meeting will be Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. with Theresa Hora as hostess for the club's annual salad luncheon. Members are asked to bring salads, and table service will be provided.
