Forestry field day planned
A forestry field day will be held Oct. 22 on the Jerry Rediger Farm located at 1256 Kiwi Ave. in rural Kalona. Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. with the program beginning at 1 p.m.

A forestry field day will be held Oct. 22 on the Jerry Rediger Farm located at 1256 Kiwi Ave. in rural Kalona. Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. with the program beginning at 1 p.m.
Topics will include: History of the farm, the "When and How To's" of pruning and thinning plantation trees, grading timber, and a tour of the farm. There are 44 acres of direct seeding which is a unique strip method that uses a rototiller to prepare a 5-foot wide "planting bed" with 8 feet between the strips.
The instructors will be Jerry Rediger, landowner; Steve Hamilton, consulting forester; John Boyles, Boyles Wood Products; Ray Lehn, district forester, Iowa DNR; and Jesse Randall, extension forester, Iowa State University, Ames.
