A free introduction to fruit tree pruning will be presented March 22-23 at the Fairfield Community Orchard near Chautauqua Park.
Avi Pogel of Full Circle Treecrops and Fairfield sustainability coordinator Scott Timm will lead the workshop, which is sponsored by the city of Fairfield and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
According to organizers, pruning is an important step to ensuring that fruit trees have a productive lifespan as well as reducing the risks for diseases and pests. A well-shaped tree allows for better harvest and stronger growth. The best time to prune trees is within the first five years of planting.
The Fairfield Community Orchard planted in 2012 is an ideal space to learn the basics of tree care, and participants will have an opportunity to practice by helping shape the local foods legacy.
The schedule will include:
Day 1, March 22, 1-3 p.m.:
? How to evaluate a tree for pruning;
? The tools you need;
? The best seasons to prune;
? Where to make cuts;
? How to shape young fruit trees for ideal growth and ease of harvest;
? Hands-on, small group practice and instruction.
Day 2, optional, March 23, 1-3 p.m.:
? Review of materials from Day 1.
? Hands-on, small-group practice and instruction;
? Volunteer pruning and maintenance in the community orchard.
This is a hands-on, outdoor workshop so participants should dress appropriately for the weather, bring water and a snack if needed. Chautauqua Park?s restrooms and water are closed until late April; plan accordingly.
