The Fry Street Quartet, an American string quartet in residence at Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University, is set to bring its tour of the Midwest to the Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts.
The classical concert, sponsored by the Fairfield Concert Association as the fourth performance of the current series, is slated for 2 p.m. March 11.
The Fry Street Quartet began its international career in 2002 as cultural ambassador to the Balkan States, sponsored by Carnegie Hall and the U.S. Department of State. As a result, the quartet has played for audiences everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Sarajevo. The group?s founding was in 1997 under the mentorship of Marc Johnson, cellist of the renowned Vermeer Quartet.
The quartet was named for the location of the group?s first rehearsal space in the Chicago neighborhood once ruled by Al Capone.
The group has received rave reviews as prizewinners in several major competitions including the Millennium Grand Prize at the Fishoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2000. They traveled to Israel to participate in the International Encounters Chamber Music Seminar in 2000 where they studied with Isaac Stern. Stern invited the quartet to the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshop in New York and subsequently arranged for the quartet?s Carnegie Hall debut in 2001.
