Funds for cover crops available
Apr. 27, 2021 11:25 pm
Limited funds are available through the Water Quality Initiative to help farmers install nutrient reduction practices such as cover crops, no-till/strip till, or using a nitrification inhibitor when applying fertilizer.
The cost share for first-time users of cover crops is $25 per acre, no-till/strip till are eligible for $10 per acre, and farmers using a nitrapyrin nitrification inhibitor when applying fall fertilizer can receive $3 per acre. Farmers utilizing these practices for the first time will receive priority consideration for assistance. Farmers that have planted cover crops in the past are eligible for $15 per acre. Acres are limited to 160 per producer.
Cover crops are beneficial in increasing soil organic matter; improving soil health, quality, and productivity; reducing erosion; reducing nitrate leaching; and suppressing seasonal weeds.
To apply for funding, inquire about cost share or other questions, contact the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District at 1621 E. Washington St. in Washington or call 319-653-6654.
