On Tuesday, June 17, the Fortnightly Garden Club met on at the home of Mary Lynn Helscher and enjoyed a walk-around of her lawn and gardens. Because a southern side of her home is too hot and dry, she removed all plants and is going to build a concrete block structure to become a ?step? garden filled with soil suitable to succulents.
Answering roll call were seven members. The meeting was conducted by leader Linda Varney, who suggested a new project for the group. This project would be to care for the garden area in front of Washington City Hall. Carolyn Schmidt made a motion to accept the project. It was seconded by Mary Langr, and the motion carried.
A program on western hummingbirds was shared by member Sonya Gonzalez. The group heard about many more than one type of hummingbird and their ?treks? across the Gulf of Mexico. The hummingbird is an amazing creature of God, weighing less than a nickel!
After the program, members enjoyed a dessert made and served by Mary Lynn.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 15, at the home of Myrna Mittler.
If you are interested in gardening and landscaping and would like to visit the Garden Club, please call Myrna at 319-653-6911. Meetings are on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.
