Geology Paddle on the Iowa River
Paddle back in time, down the Iowa River on Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The trip will depart from Sturgis Ferry Park in Iowa City and end nine river miles downstream at Hills Access. The day will be spent with a leisurely float, learning about the geology of the area with many stops at sand and rock bars along the way looking for fossilized evidence of past marine lifeforms.

Paddle back in time, down the Iowa River on Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The trip will depart from Sturgis Ferry Park in Iowa City and end nine river miles downstream at Hills Access. The day will be spent with a leisurely float, learning about the geology of the area with many stops at sand and rock bars along the way looking for fossilized evidence of past marine lifeforms.
Pre-registration is required and participation is limited to 20 boats. There is a limited number of boats available to rent. Canoes seat two and are available to rent; kayaks are solo and can be reserved for a fee. Participants can also opt to bring their own boat for a fee. The paddle is open to everyone, but children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Shuttle service is available prior to the float ? details are in the information packet. The Iowa River Water Trail is one of 19 official water trails in Iowa. The entire water trail is 72 river miles long and stretches from Sturgis Ferry Access in Iowa City to the mouth of the Mississippi near Oakville, IA. This paddling trip is cosponsored by Louisa County Conservation Board, Johnson County Conservation Board and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
