Emma Rosner scored five goals in the first half and Sierra Vogt picked up the first goal of her high school career as Fairfield ran away with a 9-0 home victory over Washington in Trojan Stadium Thursday afternoon.
?Emma?s such a competitive player and loves the game so much and that first goal for her was so important to break that barrier,? said Fairfield head coach Mandy Mellum. ?Once she gets going, she?s on fire and had she played the whole game, she would have kept scoring. But, she stepped up as a captain and volunteered to help with ball retrieval and everybody could hear her calling plays on the sidelines. She?s very vital on and off the field as a contributor.?
The junior opened the scoring with a goal in the second minute, firing a shot past Washington goalkeeper Jessica Hora. She followed that up with a goal in the 10th minute and completed the hat trick in the 17th minute with a spinning shot around a Demon defender that had screened Hora off the play.
?We?re getting better at passing, communicating and working together as a team,? said Rosner. ?I?m feeling pretty confident after this game. It was a good game. Our offense continues to do well on fast breaks when we can just take off and run with it.?
Courtney Gilmore followed with her third goal of the year, redirecting a corner kick off her body and into the back of the net in the 18th minute. Rosner then got another opportunity in the 19th, maneuvering a Washington defender into Hora and taking an easy open goal. Gilmore and Rosner each scored again before the halftime break, in the 26th and 28th minutes respectively.
The Trojans slowed down and rotated some more players in during the second half and worked heavily on making crisp passes and improving their playmaking skills.
?We played a lot better with our passing, especially in the second half,? said sophomore Ella Pollet, who had four shots on goal in the game. ?A game like this makes me feel a lot more confident going into next week because now I know our potential and what we can do.
?It feels good to play in front of our home fans and make them proud.?
Katie Bell found the net in the 46th minute to make it 8-0 and the Trojans spent the next few minutes trying to set up the senior Vogt with a chance to get a goal. Finally, in the 56th minute, Vogt collected a pass at midfield, slipped the defender and dribbled down for a shot that found the left corner of the net to make it 9-0.
?Sierra?s a great field player, but she?s so good in goal that we don?t put her out there often,? said Mellum. ?Goalies don?t usually get the same type of glory that midfielders and forwards do when they score, so it was wonderful to get her out there in her senior year. She has great ball control, is aggressive and it was the perfect way to end her first week of soccer in her senior year.?
The Trojans will savor the win for a little while, but it?s back to work for Fairfield as the team refocuses and prepares for Centerville on Monday.
?The teams we play next week won?t care about what we did this week,? said Mellum. ?This game was a good chance for the girls to see what skills as a team they need to work on. We?ll get back to work at practice on playmaking and creating opportunities to move the ball even better. Next week is a whole new week and we?re looking ahead and continuing to get better.?
