Iowa Lions Club members recently elected Dave Stoufer of Washington as their candidate for international director of Lions Clubs International, a worldwide service club organization.
The Washington school board last night voted to include a new $15.8 million high school attached to the middle school (junior high) and a new multi-purpose room at Lincoln Elementary School in the bond issue that will go before voters in April.
By April 2007 the new Washington County jail should be open and ready to accept prisoners. During the county Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday, officials from Durrant Inc., the Dubuque-based architectural firm in the county hired to serve as construction managers for the $4.2 million project, presented a timeline for construction. Basic schematics are complete. The firm expects a final design by March, letting construction bids in April, and opening bids in May. Primary construction is expected to take 10 months.

Residents wishing to help out the Washington County Humane Society may be able to do so through a surcharge on their water bills. Officers of the Humane Society requested monthly assistance of $300 from the Washington City Council, Tuesday night, possibly to be implemented through a voluntary donation on residents? utility bills.
WELLMAN ? Purchasing more city vehicles, continuing pursuit of an ISTEA grant for park improvement, hiring an architect for the library renovation project and questioning the proposed increase in cost to the city for 1996 law enforcement were matters which were addressed at the Wellman City Council meeting, Monday night.
Wilfred Vittetoe announced that he does not intend to run for another term as county supervisor at the Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting, Monday.

Bob Lowe, a 38-year veteran of the Washington Fire Department, was recognized Saturday night as the department?s Fireman of the Year. Gene Zieglowsky, who recently retired as a volunteer firefighter, was honored with a 20-year pin for his service to the department.
Margaret Ledger of Washington was elected president of the Iowa Porkettes during the organization?s annual meeting last week in Des Moines. She assumed her new statewide office at the close of the Iowa Pork Congress. As vice president of the state?s Porkettes, Ledger spoke at the convention.
RAGBRAI, an annual cross-state bicycle excursion, has designated Washington as an overnight rest stop on this year?s route. Officials said a RAGBRAI stop has a potential economic benefit to the community of between $75,000 and $100,000.

Julie Pilcher of Washington, Rhonda Gent of Wellman and Donna Thomann of Riverside will receive DAR Good Citizen awards at the chapter?s Colonial Tea to be held Feb. 14. It was announced by Mrs. Lawrence Zuehlke, chairman of the project.
Jane (Shepherd) Zielstorf of Washington has announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination for Washington County clerk of court in the June primaries.
Linda Eash and Sheryl Miller, Washington High School band students, have been named to the University of Iowa Honor Band.

E. Kelley Schlapkohl has been named Superintendent of Schools for the Washington Community School District. He will succeed John Phleger, who resigned the position, effective July 1.
