The Washington School Board members did not choose a junior high-high school building option last night, nor did they discuss how the Bow-Tie and Renovate options fit the Facilities-Decision-Making Rubric they designed. Instead, they set four public meeting dates in which the Bow-Tie and Renovate options will be presented to the public, to gather further feedback.
At 4 p.m. yesterday, Kelly Schloss and her children, Isaac and Mallory, had counted 1,821 Christmas cards that will be sent to area soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. By the end of the evening, the family had counted 2,404. The cards were stacked in piles and covered the top of an office desk in the National Guard Armory in Washington. The number of cards received was more than twice the number Kelly expected to gather two weeks ago.
In his final report to the Washington City Council, Sheriff Yale Jarvis said, ?I am glad to be passing the baton. I?m looking forward to moving on and ready to get back to a private life.?
Jarvis has administered the Washington Police Department since the late 1980s and has been Washington County sheriff for 29 years.

Washington farmer Jim Cuddeback says bagging that elusive buck is secondary to his enjoyment of being out in the wild. ?I hunt more for the experience of the hunt rather than getting the deer,? he explained. ?I missed one this year and I missed one last year.?
The Washington County Board of Supervisors approved the paperwork, Tuesday that will allow them to borrow $400,000 to repair the courthouse roof. The 10-year general obligation loan from Washington State Bank will cost the county $130,500 in interest.

Guy Horsey, a veteran newsboy who delivers The Evening Journal to subscribers in the southeast part of Washington, Sunday was named the newspaper?s ?Carrier of the Year.? Guy, 15, son of the David Horseys, received a gold wristwatch in recognition of his achievements.
Bill and Linda Smith of Crawfordsville were welcomed recently as owners of the town?s grocery store. The Smiths? store will be called Band I. Grocery. They purchased the store from John and Nancy Claassen, operators of the grocery business the past six years.
Kathy Cuddeback, county naturalist, was presented a framed certificate signed by officials of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, citing her extensive professional efforts in the field of wildlife conservation.

Women?s Lib really came to the Evening Journal carrier ranks, Friday evening as Cary Hotle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hotle, was named winner of the coveted gold watch offered annually to the carrier who has compiled the best record of customer service during the past year.
Location of the Washington Community Center is definite, hinging only on signing a deed for a strip of land now owned by the Iowa National Guard, adjacent to the county fairgrounds.

Miss Cindy Chamberlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Chamberlin and a freshman at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, is one of 10 Mount Mercy students who will attend the Advent Symposium at the University of Notre Dame.
Washington County voters will have the opportunity to cast ballots next June on a proposal to provide $750,000 in bonds to finance a new 65-bed hospital, according to an announcement today by hospital officials.
