It?s been talked about, written about and, in Washington, it?s starting to become reality. There?s a shortage of paper out there and what does manage to unravel this way costs up to 80 percent more than it did a couple of months ago, due to strikes at two Canadian paper mills. You?ll see it first at the grocery store. Hy-Vee?s Mike Christensen has little signs by the checkouts in an effort to explain why baggers no longer ask, ?Paper or plastic??
Washington County?s urban levy could decrease 8.5 percent and the rural levy, 5.5 percent for fiscal year 1996, if the budget being considered is approved at next week?s hearing. But, because of the increase in property values, the County anticipates more money.
FORT MADISON ? For the third straight season, the Washington girls? basketball team can call itself ?champion.? With the 67-45 victory over Fort Madison, the Demons clinched a share of the Southeast Seven conference title.

Walt Stutzman, Washington photographer, received the professional Photographers of Iowa award of Associate Fellow of Photography, Jan. 21, at the organization?s conference in Newton. He has operated Stutzman?s Studio for eight years.
Chad Rugg, senior running back from WACO High School, has been named to the South squad for the annual Iowa Shrine All-Star Football Game, to be played Aug. 3, in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
Tom Horne, head football coach at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, has announced his resignation to become the offensive coordinator at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Ky.

A new men?s social and community service organization, the Washington Kiwanis A.M.?ers, was officially gaveled into existence in charter night ceremonies, Saturday at the Washington Golf and Country Club.
Loree Satterfield of Washington, Joan Miller of Wellman and Penelope Frank of Riverside will receive the DAR Good Citizens Award at the colonial tea to be held soon.
50 YEARS AGO
Leonard Tindal was re-elected chairman of the Agricultural Bureau of the Washington Chamber of Commerce at a dinner held at The Captain?s Table, Saturday. Other officers of the bureau are Bob Robertson, vice chairman, and Robert Kennedy, secretary-treasurer.
Jerry Stalder returned to his studies at Parsons College in Fairfield after spending his semester break with his parents, the Ray Stalders, and working at The Captain?s Table.
