WASHINGTON (AP) ? A five-day mad cow disease scare that briefly rattled the cattle markets and raised concerns among some beef eaters has been put to rest after sophisticated chemical tests on a suspected animal showed no sign of the brain-wasting ailment.
Washington County and the City of Washington have come to terms in reference to the 28E agreement for law enforcement and communications. The Washington County Board of Supervisors approved the agreement at their meeting this morning.

Diane Kittle of Washington has joined Hospice of Washington County as patient care coordinator. Kittle, a registered nurse, will be responsible for coordinating the needs of hospice patients and their families as well as arranging volunteers to assist with those needs.
Five Washington County residents were elected to the county Extension Council at the recent general election. New council members are Bruce Platteter, Riverside; Carolyn Schmidt, Washington; Stephanie Sexton, Ainsworth; Dean Timmins, Washington; and Gene Troyer, Wellman.
Only four years ago, Washington was as dull as a 20-watt bulb around Christmas time. But, after Friday?s downtown 6 p.m. ceremony, the Washington square will radiate with light. ?We went from nothing, from three bulbs and the [awful] snowman,? Chamber of Commerce lighting committee member Nancy Nelson said.

Washington High School students, teachers and staff were evacuated from the school this morning after an anonymous telephone caller claimed a bomb was set to go off in the building, according to Police Lt. Paul Scranton. Police, county officials and rescue personnel made a room-by-room sweep of the building, but no explosive device was found, Scranton said.
CRAWFORDSVILLE ? One hundred persons were in attendance Nov. 10 for the chartering of the Crawfordsville Lioness Club. Officers for the upcoming year are Opal Beenblossom, president; Vivian Wells, vice president; Sandy Wells, secretary-treasurer; and Charlotte Beenblossom, Lion Tamer and Tailtwister.

Participating in the decisions of state Farm Bureau policy and leaders next month will be Frank Kleese of Keota. Kleese will represent the Washington County Farm Bureau in the business sessions at the 56th annual meeting of the Iowa Farm Bureau in Des Moines, Dec. 9-11.
Kenneth Bauer will be Washington?s chief of police when the present chief, Jack Cherry, retires at the first of the year. Bauer, a native of West Chester, has been a member of the police force for six years.

Mr. and Mrs. Herb Osincup and Mrs. Richard Paul were in Des Moines this morning attending the state Farm Bureau RAVE contest at which Nancy Osincup was a vocal contestant.
Lt. and Mrs. Ed Bailey and son Geoffrey planned to go to Chicago today after a visit here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Bailey. Lt. Bailey will then go to New York and from there will leave for a tour of duty with the Navy in Turkey.
Mrs. Ethel Burham was elected president of the Auxiliary to the Barracks of World War I, Wednesday evening.
