When he ends a 29-year career on Dec. 31, Sheriff Yale Jarvis will turn in only his badge. The gun he has worn to work every day stays with him, a retirement gift from his fellow officers.
Braedan Garrett of Washington and Jared Hendrickson of Columbus Junction will travel to the CapitalOne Bowl in Orlando, Fla., as members of the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band.
The new year will bring additional funds to local schools as School Infrastructure Local Option (SILO) sales and service taxation will begin Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, and continue for the next 10 years.
Because of the generosity of Washington Junior High School students, food and gifts were delivered to 15 local families this Christmas.
Unfortunately for the junior high school?s faculty, the students were just as generous when it came time to deliver pies to the faces of their teachers.

Very few celebrities discover in small Midwestern towns that their future should be acting. DeLane Matthews is one of the exceptions.
Matthews, the daughter of two Iowa Wesleyan College professors, is one of the stars of the CBS television series ?Dave?s World.? She has hit the big time after discovering her career in the rural, county-seat town of Fairfield.
As new foster parents, John and Suzy Marek are going through the stages of potty training, teething and puberty, as well as teaching right from wrong.
But for this rural Washington couple, there is no guarantee how long their 5-year-old ?baby? will be a part of their family.
Heidi Sue, who came to stay with the Mareks in April, is a Capuchin monkey who is being trained through the Helping Hands program. Eventually, Heidi Sue will be placed in the home of a quadriplegic, assisting with daily tasks and serving as a companion.

Four Washington Demon Jayvee wrestlers captured titles in the Williamsburg Jayvee Tournament Saturday. Jim Allender (145), Ben Greiner (185), heavyweight Chad Kauffman and super heavyweight Terry Evans all won titles at Williamsburg while Monte Pope (132) and Len Kull (138) earned seconds.
The Iowa Department of Transportation will spend an estimated $4 million on highway improvements in Washington County in 1985, according to IDOT?s new five-year plan. The agency has earmarked $3.5 million for paving 13.89 miles of new Highway 218 from the junction of Highway 92 near Ainsworth north to a point near the junction of Highway 22 near Riverside.
Over $36,000 was donated to WACO Crop Drive by area residents, according to figures just released by Canvass Directors Eldon and Pauline Wyse and Treasurer Lawrence Henss. Cash gifts totaling $17,791.96 and 7,072 bushels of corn ? worth $18,900.56 ? brought the total amount to $36,692.52.

Mrs. Bruce (Sheilah) Klapp is the new society editor at the Washington Evening Journal. She replaces Mrs. Lester (Dorothy) Luckenbill who retired this week.
KEOTA ? The weekly newspaper here, the Keota Eagle, began its 100th year of publication this year. Publisher Roger Richardson said the first issue of the paper was published in December of 1875, and noted he has bound volumes of every issue except the first six months the paper was published.
The Washington County Fair Association won assurance Thursday that it will be given legal title to 8.5 acres of Townsley Park, a tract that is a prime part of the county fairgrounds. The council is expected to relinquish ownership of the land, which was willed to the city in 1931, by a carefully worded quitclaim deed.
Mrs. Vi Young won the Women?s Singles Championship in the YMCA Tri-County tennis tournament by defeating Barbara Lund 6-2, 6-2. Mrs. John Walker defeated Mrs. Dale Caldwell 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation bracket to claim their place.

John Cruise will return to school Sunday at the State University of Iowa after spending the Christmas holiday with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. M.J. Cruise.
