KIRKSVILLE, Mo. ? Dana Mottet of Brighton has been awarded an endowed scholarship from the Truman State University Foundation for the 2004-2005 academic year. Mottet, a sophomore music major, has been awarded the Alpha C. Mayfield Music Scholarship ($300).
Mottet is a graduate of Washington High School.

RIVERSIDE ? The Highland Huskies Marching Band performed in the 49th annual Kentucky Derby Pegasus Parade in Louisville, Ky., on Thursday, April 29. The audience was estimated at 250,000 on a beautiful 80-degree day. Sixteen bands were selected from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida and Kentucky. Highland was the only Iowa band.
DES MOINES ? A once-in-a-lifetime experience awaits 14-year-old Jaci Thode of Washington at the Wells Fargo Junior Pro-Am, Tuesday, May 18. Thode will join 35 other golfers ages 12 to 18 who will tee up with Champions Tour players during the third-annual Wells Fargo Junior Pro-Am at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines.
Thode was one of 36 golfers selected from more than 170 entries based on the 100- to 200-word essay they submitted.
Thode, who attends Washington Junior High School, wrote about how her grandfather, Earnie Beemblossom, introduced her to golf.

Farmers, miffed about proposed ag area fees, and a couple of local attorneys who were about as pleased with the proposed ordinance establishing the fees, talked the Washington County Board of Supervisors into reconsidering yesterday. The ordinance would have set fees for administering, recording, publication and document handling in the establishment of agricultural areas.
The future of an athletic home for the Washington Demons and four other conference schools will be on the line tomorrow when Southeast Seven athletic directors meet with athletic directors from the South Central Conference in Oskaloosa.
City Attorney Craig Arbuckle presented the first draft of a rehauled nuisance ordinance to the Washington City Council, Tuesday night.

Strong winds and rains pummeled southeast Iowa Sunday, knocking out power in Packwood, Richland, Letts and Fredonia. Locally, the worst damage involved the Norbert Becker farm about six miles northeast of Ainsworth, where a large section of roof off a machine shed was dropped on a nearby parked car.
Ann Harris of Washington, who will graduate May 12 from a four-year program at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, was recently elected to the national honorary dental fraternity Omicron Kappa Upsilon. The award is limited to 12 percent of the graduating class.
Keith Williams of Washington has been honored by Hawkeye National Life Insurance Co. of Des Moines for sales achievement, receiving the ?Millionaire?s Club? award.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene Booth have purchased the Kampers Korner near the entrance of Lake Darling from the Larry Locks of Onawa. David Booth will be the manager.
WELLMAN ? Mike Yoder won the FFA public speaking championship of Iowa and Curtis Stutzman received a gold award in creed speaking, Thursday at the state FFA Leadership conference in Davenport. Yoder and Paul Griffith received the coveted Iowa Farmer degree.
AINSWORTH ? An underground explosion here in one of the town?s wells ?appears to have worked? in increasing the water output, Mayor John Hazelett said today. He noted that before the blast it took 40 seconds to fill a five-gallon bucket, and in the afternoon, it took only 20 seconds.

Mrs. Oneita Fisher of West Chester won first place in the adult division of the Iowa Poetry Association annual contest. Her poem, judged best in the general adult contest, is entitled, ?Divorce Looking Back.?
Miss Maude Jackson is in Washington, D.C., this week attending the national Democratic Campaign Conference for Women. Miss Jackson is a board member and parliamentarian for the Democratic Women?s Club of Washington County.
