Pastor Rick Zickefoose, representing the Brighton Community Church, provided the weekly church services. The sermon was titled 'Salvation by Grace.” Scripture from Matthew 7:21-23 was shared with those attending. Beth Janecek shared her musical talents on the piano. Special guests were Anne Zickefoose and John and Linda Nelson, of the Brighton Community Church.
Betty Osincup attended church at Shiloh in Kalona, Sunday, with her granddaughter Regina Roselund, of Riverside. They then went to Coralville and met Betty's daughters Elyse Chapman and Donna and husband Bob Olson. They dined at Applebee's and enjoyed a City Circle Theater Company matinee production, 'The Christians.” Regina and Betty stopped for a treat at the Dairy Mart in Ainsworth before returning to Washington.
Lois Greiner spent Friday afternoon with her granddaughter, Lillian Lois, a kindergartner at Keota Elm Elementary School. They sang songs and had a treat of milk and cookies. Also, they made two art projects. They drew around their hands and signed their names. Then they glued a multicolored star together, which Grandma Lois got to keep!
The trivia program theme was 'School Lunch Box.” Everyone started with a word search puzzle pertaining to school-day activities. Everyone enjoyed the gala apple slices served at this program. Don Kline shared his antique school lunch bucket, which had a tin cup attached to it and three compartments inside for different food items. Ethel Sieren brought in a Mickey Mouse School Bus Lunch Box like the one she had when attending country school. She also brought in several old reader books, including Dick and Jane books, for everyone to look at. There were many memories shared about the one-room country school, and we even had a couple of teachers in the group who shared their experience teaching in a one-room classroom.
Due to the late-summer season, squash was the topic of discussion, Monday at Lending Hands, with Carol Greiner as leader. Not only did we learn about the food, but Carol gave the opportunity to taste a few bites of cooked spaghetti squash - which several liked, while others decided the fruit wasn't for them. (Yes, squash is a fruit.) We also used green- and orange-colored pumpkin seeds to make a small pumpkin photo to hang on the window where we display our artwork. On Tuesday, Sherry Sieren read stories to us. For our Wednesday event, Liz Goodwin, second-grade teacher at Stewart School in Washington, showed colorful photos of her summer trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and told about her trip. On Thursday, Peg Buffington entertained on piano and we sang along to numerous songs we knew. Friday was our monthly karaoke day, in which many enjoyed singing their favorite tunes such as 'Let It Go,” 'I Walk the Line,” and 'Heavenly Sunlight.” Music is one of our favorite activities at Lending Hands.
Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Meridee Woods!
