It has been reported that the baseball and softball games at the WHS fields have been enjoyed by several Halcyon residents. It is so convenient being across the street, watching the excitement and, of course, eating grilled hot dogs and Yotty?s homemade ice cream bars from Kalona, also a summer treat.
Rex Severt always looks forward to having his daughter, Linda Dasovic of Omaha, come to see him. They always manage to get into some kind of trouble. They both love life and each other.
Mary Ann Hennigan had a busy week with son, Joe, Lisa and family from Greensboro, N.C. The family stayed in the Halcyon guest room, spent time with Matt, Missy and their family and shared loads of laughs.
Phil Kneen celebrated his 94th birthday on Saturday, July 5, in the Halcyon coffee shop/library. Daughters Karla Lance, MaryAnn Knupp and Mollie Forsch were on hand to host the event. Coffee and cookies were enjoyed by neighbors, friends and family as they took turns with birthday greetings and the chance to reciprocate by giving Phil a hard time.
Betty Osincup had three of her four daughters here in Iowa for almost two weeks. Janet Hurley, who lives in Miami, Fla., was unable to come to the Shiloh School of Prophets Summer Camp. Nancy Roselund came from Canyon Country, Calif., and stayed with her daughter, Regina Roselund. Betty?s two Iowa daughters, Donna Schultz and Elyse along with Ben Chapman, attended the annual Independence Day fireworks. A crowd of around 4,000 people also gathered to enjoy the July 3 fireworks display. The Shiloh University had its first graduation ceremony on July 4, and daughter Nancy serves as an online teacher for the university. Nancy had lunch with Larry and Amy Wehr from McCall, Idaho, who were at Halcyon helping out Alice Moore during her recovery. The family enjoyed dinner at the Riverside Casino in honor of Nancy?s ?Biggie Birthday? after Sunday church. Granddaughter Regina, who works in food services, had the chef surprise her mother with a special dessert of cake, chocolate mousse, raspberries and decorations. Betty plans to celebrate her ?Biggie Birthday? later this year with all four of her daughters.
Haley Hopkins is serving as the summer Wellness Department Intern. Haley graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in health promotion. There were 35 members of the Washington Municipal Band who gave an outstanding performance on the front lawn of Halcyon House. It was a wonderful evening to be outdoors, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the patriotic music in honor of the Fourth of July.
The ladies of the Marion Avenue Church gathered in the Day Lounge to share their musical talents with their listening audience. The group of 11 ladies, along with pianist Marchel Dunbar and music leader Rebekah Griswold, did a splendid job.
Ethel?s program was titled ?Patriotic Month.? Trivia was shared as was the history of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, which was drafted by Thomas Jefferson in June of 1776 and is the nation?s most cherished symbol of liberty. The Statue of Liberty that stands 151 feet tall and weighs 225 tons was delivered to the American ambassador in Paris and then later transported to America after being dismantled into 300 pieces. A delicious treat called ?July 4th Trifles? with ingredients of strawberries, blueberries, yogurt, whipped cream and angel food cake was served to everyone.
Halcyon extends condolences to Ole Gingerich and family. Adeline was a wonderful person who was always doing for others, especially the children. It is now her turn to soar with the angels in heaven. Halcyon will miss you Adie.
