Kitch Shatzer provided the weekly service to Halcyon House residents on Sunday, Aug. 6. The sermon was titled ?Our Lord?s Abundant Table,? and included Scripture from Matthew 14:13-21. Pastor Herb Yoder representing the United Presbyterian Church led the weekly service with Halcyon House residents. The sermon was titled ?Under His Wings,? and included Scripture from Psalm 91:4. Dorothy Koehler and Mary Atwood provided special music for the service.
Halcyon House welcomed four new volunteers this month: Joan Sieren,Tiffany Shafer and son, Maison, along with their terrier mix dog ?Ranger.? Joan has been active in all four households sharing laughs and talking with residents. The residents enjoyed a Pet Therapy visit by Tiffany, Maison and Ranger, who ended his rounds by falling asleep in the arms of one resident.
Residents of Halcyon enjoy weekly volunteers who share their time and talents with us. Mary June Adams helps with residents in Rosewood and assists during Bingo as well as Marcella Reed. Carol Mottet plays ?dice? with the residents in Wedgewood. Richard Colby shares his ?Classics Et Cetera? music program with residents in the Rosewood Sensory Room on Thursdays and again in the Chapel on Friday mornings. This week Richard?s program included musical works by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Franz Schubert, Joaquin Rodrigo, Hector Berlioz, song from The Wizard of Oz, Franz Joseph Haydn and Frank White Meacham. Each week residents enjoy Music Therapy with Elisabeth Tinnes, owner of Joy of Music. Lending Hands team member Mary Jo Koehler comes to Halcyon for large audiences to sing and play the guitar each week as well.
Every Wednesday, residents look forward to the ?Bistro Buddies? lunch group where they enjoy socializing and sharing a wonderful lunch prepared by the Applewood Bistro.
Arborwood residents have enjoyed creating puff-painted butterflies and a cooking class where they made and enjoyed apple-cinnamon monkey bread.
Virginia Tschantz celebrated her birthday Aug. 6-14 with her family. She welcomed out of state visitors-her sister, Barbara, from Florida and her brother and his wife, Phil and Lois Myers, from Colorado. They had many get-togethers with good food and great conversation. Among the places they enjoyed during the week were Iowa City, Amana, Kalona, the Applewood Bistro and a special time at Virginia?s son and daughter-in-law?s, Rusty and Denise Tschantz, complete with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Cousins Mary Yoder from Wellman, Vernie and Betty Lowry and Gladys Ferguson enjoyed lunch at the Applewood Bistro. They all spent the afternoon together and enjoyed visiting in Gladys? apartment.
Mary Meeks had a nice morning visit recently with her cousin, Larry and Ruth O?Connor from Altoona.
Halcyon House residents gathered this week for Mix and Mingle. Marketing Director, Susan Wellington, hosts this fun, informal way to meet new neighbors or catch up with old ones. Complimentary light appetizers are served and beverages are available to purchase. Those attending this week included: Denny and Connie Sorrell, Fred and Nan Stark, Sandy and Pete Weller, Jane Leyden, Becky Patterson, Erma Ropp, Betty Osincup, Alice George, and Virginia Tschantz.
Halcyon House residents gather weekly on Monday and Wednesday for social hour. All residents are welcome and the more the merrier! They bring their own snacks, favorite drinks, and enjoy the company of one another. Attendees vary weekly, this week we saw: Becky Patterson, Jane Leyden, Denny and Connie Sorrell, Bill Chmelar, Don and Loretta Gardner, and Isy Flander.
Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Gladys Carson, Donna Schoonover, Mary Graber, Bonnie Applegate, Gladys Ferguson, Marilyn Davis, Mathena Barta, and Jim Jewell.
