It was a busy week for Halcyon residents. For Active Aging Week, Fonizba Foster of Fairfield brought her African drums for approximately 30 residents to enjoy listening to. The residents enjoyed playing with and learning a little history about these unusual drums. Collin Kerstetter of Iowa City, certified chair Zumba instructor, led residents in chair dance routines to music of their era.
?Can You Feel the Beat as the Demons Turn up the Heat? was the Halcyon House theme for our float entry for in the Homecoming parade. The residents and team members decorated the float as a Disco Club with mirror balls, ?70s music, instruments and a bubble machine blowing bubbles everywhere along the route. The best part of the parade was residents dressed as ?70s characters. John Travolta (Denny Sorrell) and his dance partner (Connie Sorrell). Sonny (Bill Chmelar) Cher (Alice Edgin) and disco dancers (Wes and Carroll Madsen) entertained along the parade route. Marcella Reed, Gladys Ferguson, Rosie Stelton on keyboard, Betty Osincup on drums, and Fritz Conrad dressed in 70?s attire. Bonnie Bonnell, Phyllis Lyle, Ethel Hendrickson, Mark Meeks, team members and several of their children dressed in orange and black and rode the back of the truck throwing candy.
Sybil Thornton?s grandson, Keith, is an EMT in Port Royal, South Carolina. He has been evacuating hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities round the clock for the last 48 hours. As of Thursday morning he and his fiancée, Heather, are headed to Charlotte in search of a motel that will accept many animals. They have several of their own plus many from the vet clinic where Heather is employed. God bless everyone, especially those in harm?s way.
Virginia Tschantz enjoyed having her brother, Phil and wife Lois Myers here over the weekend. They traveled from Golden, Colorado, for the visit. They went to the Amanas and attended the football game on Friday night. They also spent time visiting other family and friends.
Approximately 30 residents gathered in the Applewood Bistro for a wine tasting, taco bar, and welcome for all the new residents who moved to Halcyon House in 2016. They enjoyed tasting the wine and the raspberry was definitely the house favorite.
Several residents enjoyed lunch in the Applewood Bistro recently. Those include: Sybil Thornton; Margrette and Allan Utech, Linda Sturdenvent joined by daughter, Stacy; Audrey Goldsmith; and Ione Burham.
Happy birthday this week to Irene Baughman, Margrette Utech, and Rosie Stelton.
