Many Independent Living residents enjoyed a program on ?Flavors of the Great Midwest? presented by Dan Kaercher of the Iowa Humanities Speaker Bureau. Dan is the retired founding editor of Midwest Living Magazine, host of ?Iowa?s Simple Pleasures? and other travel-related programs aired on public television nationally. Dan spoke of the many wonderful places to dine in Iowa and throughout the Midwest. The program was accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation of these many locations that Dan has frequented over the years. The residents were also treated to Dutch letters brought to them by Dan from Pella.

Isy Flander hosted a family gathering with her children last week. Daughter, Melinda Holden of Manly, and son and daughter-in-law, Gary/Maureen Flander from Denver, Colorado, arrived last Thursday. Lewis and Cathi Meeks of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, and Richard and Malinda Meeks of Mountain Home, Arkansas, came to visit their mother, Mary Meeks and other families in the community. They spent the day with Mary on June 9. Lewis put new tires on Mary?s power chair. They ate dinner out and Dick and Malinda stayed that evening and took Mary to the band concert in Central Park. On June 14 they came again and went to the cemeteries in Washington, Ainsworth and Crawfordsville to pick up the flowers Lewis and Mary had put on the graves before Memorial Day. They had a good meal at Four Corners Café at noon. It brought back memories for Mary of spending 11 years there working at Everett?s Standard Service 50 years ago!! Both couples left that afternoon to go back to their homes in the next few days.
Halcyon House welcomes new resident, Jean Fontinel. Jean joins us from her home in Vinton. Jean relocated to Washington to be closer to her son and his wife, Doug and Diane Foxworthy who live in Brighton.
We extend sympathy from Halcyon House residents and team members to the family of Dolores Witte.
