Avalon residents celebrated Valentine?s Day dining on Pizza Hut pizzas, breadsticks and homemade strawberry/pretzel dessert. They shared stories about how they met their sweethearts. They finished the day watching ?For Me and My Gal? in the Day Lounge. To celebrate ?National Hippo Day? the residents learned facts about hippos and worked on a word search. Later many played Bingo, which is always a favorite activity and many walked away with a prize. Tying in with the animal theme, the residents ended the day watching ?Wild America? which was inspired by the true story of the Stouffer Brothers in 1968 whose oldest brother Marty later became a wildlife documentary filmmaker and television producer of ?Wild America.? Back by popular demand, Adam Todd gave a presentation of purple martins, bluebirds and invasive species of birds for ?Backyard Bird Watching Day.? He gave an interesting Power Point presentation with many wonderful photos taken by his mother Teresa Todd. During the cooking class, residents made dill pickle roll-ups and dill pickle dip. In honor of Presidents Day, the residents have been learning facts about the presidents each day.
The Resident Culture Club divided up into several different committees, Spiritual, Social, Music, Decorating, Gardening, and lots more! Currently Halcyon House resident Eva Gallagher is organizing music for every Saturday afternoon. Virginia Tschantz, Beth Janecek, Audrey Stark, and Eva Gallagher all play the piano for their fellow residents. Glenys Elwood is planning to implement a Bible study for women this spring at Halcyon House. The decorating committee will be decorating the entryways and lounges with spring décor. Gladys Ferguson is hosting an Adult Creative Coloring Class every Saturday morning. The Resident Culture Club is also planning a 1950?s themed party for May Day! Lots of activity is going on at Halcyon House thanks to the Culture Club Members!
One of the suggestions made by the Resident Culture Club was to implement Wii Game nights. Therefore, Tuesday, Feb. 14, Gladys Ferguson, Jean Reitz, Bonnie Applegate, Eva Gallagher and other residents enjoyed learning how to use the Wii gaming system at Halcyon House. They played Wii bowling and golf! A big thank-you to Jarek for demonstrating to the residents how to use the Wii. The first Wii game night will be held Sunday, Feb. 26 in the game room of Halcyon House.
A six-week session of Cranium Crunch (brain health class) has ended and will resume on Tuesdays, starting on March 7. Residents enjoy doing crosswords, word search, word fit, scramble, fill-in-the-blank, trivia, word search mazes and much more. This is an excellent activity to keep the brain fit and a fun social gathering.
Halcyon House extends our congratulations to two residents who met on campus and were married in a wonderful ceremony in the Morrison this past weekend. Alice Edgin was the beautiful bride and Bill Chmelar the handsome groom!
Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Delores Wood, Bob Friese, Eva Gallagher, and Gerald Schimmelpfennig.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the friends and family members of Gladys Gardner and Mike Leyden.
