Halcyon House News

Minister Rob Jarrard, representing Presbyterian Church, provided the weekly chapel service to Halcyon House residents on Sunday, June 16, 2019. The sermon 'Heavenly Father's Mercifulness through Jesus” was shared with those in attendance.

Halcyon House hosted a wonderful celebration Wednesday, June 19, in honor of 60 years of serving older adults in southeast Iowa. Local dignitaries, including WesleyLife CEO Rob Kretzinger and Washington Mayor Jaron Rosien, were on hand to offer their wishes for the next 60 years to be equally successful for the campus and the Washington community. The evening included a live performance by the James Crossroads Band, Ribbon Cutting, history display and a delicious pork loin dinner.

Arborwood residents were treated to homemade ice cream and fresh-baked brownies on Thursday, June 13. Jeannie Edwards made strawberry and peanut butter flavored ice cream. Many residents have not had homemade ice cream in quite some time. Iris and Izzy Peterson, Jeannie's granddaughters, helped serve our afternoon treats. We thank them for their time and the delicious frozen treat.

Friday, June 14, for our afternoon 'Happy Hour” residents were served chocolate and vanilla ice cream sundaes in celebration of Father's Day in each household.

Halcyon House hosted a Dementia Live Class Thursday, June 20, from 1 to 2 p.m., in the Morrison Center at Halcyon House. Halcyon House provided family caregivers with this unique opportunity to briefly, yet movingly, experience the challenges and struggles of a person living with dementia.

Using specialized gear within a safe, experiential setting, Dementia Live gives a real-life simulation of what it must be like to live with dementia. Greater understanding leads to more sensitive care partnering.
