Cranium Crunch was very well attended at Halcyon House. We did some memory worksheets together, and talking about the good old days brought a lot of discussion on how things have changed in the past 100 years. Some of the big changes that were discussed were indoor plumbing, electricity, polishing shoes on Saturday night for church (because you only had one pair), games like hop scotch and jump-rope, drinking cold water that you pumped from the well, and how this generation has become too dependent on electronics. Riding bikes, going to the creek, and playing outside were to name just a few of the activities that everyone enjoyed growing up.
At trivia on Monday, Jan. 13, the title was 'It's Kind of a Peanut Butter Day.” We started out with a word search on allergens, since nuts are among the top things that people are allergic to. The health benefit of eating peanut butter is that it contains many nutrients that can improve heart health (eat in moderation). A fun fact shared was that 75 percent of all American households have peanut butter in their cupboard. Most peanut butters are vegan and gluten-free. Peanut butter was originally made for people with no teeth. If you took all of the peanut butter that Americans eat in one year, it could coat the floor of the Grand Canyon. It takes 540 peanuts to make a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter; and according to Little Brownie Bakers, cookie bakers use about 230,000 pounds of peanut butter per week to bake Girl Scout Do-si-dos and Tagalongs. For this nutty program we had peanut butter and jelly (Goobers) sandwiches, peanut butter and celery, and just plain honey-roasted peanuts to try.
