The Immanual Lutheran Church shared the weekly service with Halcyon House residents this past Sunday. Pastor Maureen Howard shared the sermon titled ?God in the Fleeing.? She shared Scripture from Matthew 2:1-18 with those in attendance.
The residents of Avalon started the year off watching the 128th Tournament of Roses Parade while sipping hot chocolate. To celebrate the occasion, the activities department gave each of the residents in Avalon and Arbor House a single rose with greenery in a bud vase. Afterward, they watched the Iowa Hawkeyes at the Outback Bowl and enjoyed ?tailgating? with snacks of cheese, crackers and Boyd?s bologna. Following was the Rose Bowl game. They topped off a fun-filled afternoon with decorated cookies and homemade mints. On Thursday, Jan. 5, the residents enjoyed listening to Richard Colby and his Classics Et Cetera program in the Chapel. That afternoon, they were treated to ?Tuba Duo? consisting of tuba players Gary McCurdy and Nicholas Todd. They were so popular at Christmas, the residents were excited to have them back. After the music program the residents shared their creative talents making mini sun catchers to hang in their windows during the Creative Arts program.
Last month residents participated in the Senior Fitness Assessment. They were measured for muscle strength, cardiovascular strength and flexibility. This week the Wellness Department will go over each resident?s results to help them determine an exercise regime best suited to them.
Maxine Davison enjoyed a visit from her son, Russ, of Swanee, Georgia, over the holidays. Russ arrived and told her he had a special package coming for her. The next day he left to go get her package. When he got back he had Maxine close her eyes, and then brought in her package. When she opened her eyes she was surprised by her grandson, Andrew and his new wife, Shana, of Atlanta, Georgia. The visit was extra-special, as when Andrew and Shana were married in September, Maxine was forced to miss the wedding due to a hospitalization and she didn?t expect to be able to see them for quite a while. They all spent time driving around Washington to see the changes and then met up with Mike Tschantz and Rich Crull, friends of Russ, in Kalona for dinner. They also spent time in Pella with Maxine?s daughter, Donna, and her family to celebrate Christmas.
Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Chick Lyle and Enid Tweeton.
