Halcyon residents make trip to Reflecting Waters

Sagewood residents at Halcyon House in Washington took a short trip to the Reflecting Waters outdoor pond, where old friends caught up on shared memories and residents watched staff catch tadpoles. “Farmer John,” a Sagewood resident, planted tomatoes in the raised gardens beds outdoors as residents observed and enjoyed root beer floats. Staff member Maria Canchola hand-crocheted butterflies to give to residents to don as barrettes and corsages. Pink and fuschia-colored peonies were picked and used to decorate the dining room tables.
During the Wedgewood Artist with HeArt, residents painted individual quilt square patterns on small canvases. The paintings will be put together and displayed as a large quilt.
Residents celebrating past birthdays in June include Chuck Atwood, Isy Flander, Rita Greiner, Pat Havel, Carol Bell, Mike Sauser, Carol Madsen, Tish Cory and Laura Sheetz. Those with birthdays this week are Bonny Bonnell, Don Gardner, Betty Quinn and Connie Sorrell.
News for June 13-19, 2022
The men of Halcyon House gathered to celebrate Father’s Day for a Grill and Chill luncheon in the Morrison Center. The men enjoyed “dad jokes” and a program given by Don Kline on vintage fishing lures. Each attendee went home with a tackle box filled with all the snacks needed for a successful fishing trip.
Along with the Father’s Day barbecue, the Wedgewood residents enjoyed the music of the Keota Brass Band, and were served ice cream for refreshments. They have been enjoying the beauty of the flowers from the gardens in the courtyard.
The residents of Rosewood have been exploring information from books about the Great Depression. Viewing the photos in one of the books has been interesting for them, and the stories are thought-provoking. The art wall continues to be refreshed with new creations. Recent art works have included the use of watercolors and markers on canvas.
National Nursing Assistants Weeks is June 16-23 this year. Halcyon has been honoring its Certified Nursing and Resident Assistants for what they do. They are an essential part of the work of caring for those who need assistance.
The Halcyon House Programming Team is planning a County Fair themed day for Wednesday, July 6 and is looking for young people in 4-H or FFA to share their projects with the residents. For those interested in volunteering, including leaders, parents and participants, contact Becky Carter at 319-653-8453 or Laurie Pemberton at 319-653-8317 for more details.
We wish a happy birthday to the following residents this week: Lila Davis, Wilma Fontinel, and Malcolm Brodie.
