Sunday worship in Epworth Chapel on the campus of Halcyon House in Washington was led by Pastor Rick Zickefoose of Brighton Community Church. The sermon was titled, “Living a Godly Life.” Dorothy Koehler led music on the piano. Anne Zickefoose joined the group as a guest.
Nostalgia was a big topic of conversation around Rosewood this week while listening to musical artists of days gone by including Guy Lombardo and Dean Martin. Residents sang along to “Mockingbird Hill” by Burl Ives and “Open Up Your Heart” by the McGuire Sisters. The days of the Great Depression were discussed through short stories and pictures of the era.
In Arborwood, residents created their own story during a Mad Libs game. Residents were asked to supply nouns, verbs, adjectives, numbers, types of foods and more – whatever came to mind – knowing nothing at all about the story they were creating. These words were plugged into appropriate spots in the story, leading to hilarity.
The story was about the arrival of packages to the household, one for every resident, who opened theirs to find random items to which they reacted in random ways.
Painting wooden birdhouses helped pass the time for the craft lovers in Arborwood. Residents also prepared Energy Bites for themselves and for the Washington Area Soccer Team (WASP). The residents mixed together peanut butter, honey, ground chia seeds, ground flax seeds, vanilla, salt and oats to create these healthy and delicious treats.
In Sagewood, the residents enjoyed the fantastic fall weather as classic and antique cars paraded through the parking lot during the Red Flag Car Show. Residents and staff reminisced about the classic and antique cars they used to own. To top off the event, fall sugar cookies were served as a special treat.
Residents exercised their brains during Memory Games and Brain Busters. They created about fifty different words out of the word “observant.”
Fried green tomatoes pleased the palates of Wedgewood residents this week, prepared for them by kitchen staff member Ren Weiss using flour, eggs, bread crumbs and seasoning, and fried until crispy. Residents hope to enjoy this treat one more time before the garden is cut down for the winter.
The Red Flag Car parade was enjoyed on one of the most pleasant days of the week. The residents were grateful for the assistance of the household nursing staff who made sure they were able to get outside to enjoy the parade and the weather. Craft projects included painting stenciled fall designs on canvas and decorating pumpkins with paint, birds, berries and leaf décor.
