Looking for some not-so-scary fun for Halloween this year? Want to get out and enjoy nature at night? Then come to the Washington County Conservation Board?s annual Halloween Hike. This event will run from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. at Marr Park on Saturday, Oct. 18.
The theme for this year?s hike is ?Aliens Among Us? and focuses on invasive species. You will learn about what invasives are, why they are a problem, and what you can do to help. You?ll also learn about some specific invaders as you hike the luminary and jack - o - lantern lit trail around the mini-lake.
You will begin your adventure at the Mary Marr Lodge (between the two ponds). At the Lodge, you?ll gain some background information and enter the Invasive vs. Native Obstacle Course. Heading down the trail, you?ll first encounter the Hungry, Hungry Goldfish and learn about the effects of releasing home-raised animals into the wild. The next Challenge is Sticky Seeds, where you?ll discover that some invasives, like garlic mustard, are accidentally brought from one location to the next. The last Challenge focuses on our most recent threat, the emerald ash borer. You?ll pretend to help woodpeckers eliminate this threat (or rather, a yummy substitute) and prevent the introduction of the deadly ?emerald Styrofoam borer? in Stop the Invasion!
Finally, finish at the Conservation Education Center for refreshments and more Challenges. Activities include making crafts and invasive identification.
The Trail can be entered anytime between 6:45 and 8 p.m. Activities in the Center will run through 8:30. This annual Halloween Hike is fun and educational for the whole family. All ages are welcome to attend.
Because the trail will only be luminary-lit (moon rise won?t occur till later), participants may wish to bring flashlights to ensure safer footing as they hike.
In case of rain, indoor activities will still be held.
