Healthy snacks invade Stewart Elementary

Healthy fruit and vegetable snacks have invaded the Stewart Elementary through TryDay Healthy Living Program for kindergarten and first grade students. This school enrichment program is delivered by Washington County Extension & Outreach/4-H with a lesson each month.

During the program students learn about a new fresh fruit or vegetable each month. They are encouraged to try it as a class while they learn how the food is grown and harvested, how to purchase it in the stores, ways it is good for their body and ways to it eat. First grade students also focus on a new health lesson each week regarding hand washing, exercise, food groups, and hygiene.

TryDay started in October with apple taste tests and lessons on bravery to try new things.

The TryDay Healthy Living Program is supported by Stewart Elementary Boosters. Students receive a coupon for the Food of the Month supported by Washington Fareway and HyVee, Freeman Foods in Wellman and JWs in Kalona.
