The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission met on Wednesday July 17, 2019, at the Henry County Courthouse. Present at the meeting were Caroline Lehman, Faye Heartsill, Martha Francy, Larry D. Roth, Mary Savage, Joel Garretson, Pat White, and Judy Rawson.
The National Park Service and the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs announced that the Samuel and Sarah Hulme House at 1577 Franklin Ave, in Trenton has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This has been part of an ongoing effort by the Commission to recognize and place historic properties in Wayland and Jefferson Township to the National Register. Other properties in the Wayland area are being considered as candidates for nomination.
Faye Heartsill discovered some interesting articles and photograph from 1867 through 1932 regarding the planning, building, operation, and eventual demise of the K-Line RR. The Commission has been gathering documents and information of Henry County's RR history in an effort to identify and document the locations of the abandoned rail lines.
A special presentation by Russ Frye regarding the old Agency Military Road will be given at the Dover Museum in New London on Sunday, July 21, at 1:30 p.m.. Crooked Creek Days in Winfield takes place the first weekend in August.
The next Commission meeting will Wednesday Aug. 21.
