The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission met June 16 at the Henry County Heritage Trust. Attending were Chad Brousseau, Johanna Crawford, Joel Garretson, Caroline Lehman, Jeff McPheron, Judy Rawson, Mary Savage, and Pat White.
The minutes and agenda were approved with amendments and corrections. Pat White reported on her attendance at the Iowa Preservation Summit in Muscatine on June 6. Two new historic brown sites are in the works for the C.B.&Q. Depot in Winfield and the old Oakland Mills Country Club. The issuance of small grants by the Commission to the county's small museums for historic preservation was discussed. Pat White has completed the majority of the text for the historic guide book and Joel Garretson led a discussion on mapping and format options. Judy Rawson proposed a menu of icons to be used in marking the sites on a map. The next step is the gathering of photographs, maps, and images for the book.
There are several upcoming history programs in the county; at the Henry County Heritage Trust on June 21 at 2 p.m. "Henry County Confederates" by David Connon, and on the same day at the church in Swedesburg, the summer solstice celebration on June 21, and next month at the Dover Museum on July 20 at 1:30 "Henry Clay Seymour, Our Civil War Ancestor" a presentation by Matt and Tiffany Hauptman.
The next meeting will be held July 16 at the Henry County Courthouse.
