The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission met Wednesday November 15, 2023 at the Henry County Courthouse. Attending were Caroline Lehman, Mary Savage, Larry D. Roth, Pat White, Judy Rawson, Johanna Crawford, and Joel Garretson.
Two major projects were recently completed with the National Park Service's approval of the Wayland Historic Residential District nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, and the publishing and printing of the Commission's latest book, The Cemeteries of Henry County.
A street sign to be placed at the head of the historic district in Wayland is in the works. The Cemeteries of Henry County book will be available for purchase at the Auditor's office, local county museums, and select locations for $30. A separate press release and announcement with more details regarding the book will be forthcoming.
In other business, there were discussions regarding the DAR Lowell Mills monument repair, and preparations and upcoming meetings for the 2024 Preserve Iowa Summit to be held in Mt. Pleasant in June of 2024. Commissioner Rawson announced that the Winfield Museum will hold an open house, holiday lighting contest, and tour on Saturday December 16 from 5-7 pm. Hot chocolate and other refreshments will be available. The next commission meeting will be held January 17.
