The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission met Wednesday May 18 at the Dover Museum in New London. Present were Cathie Schreiner, Caroline Lehman, Johanna Crawford, Mary Savage, Judy Rawson, Joel Garretson, Larry D. Roth, and guest Lynn Conrad. Larry Roth provided an update on the National Register of Historic Places nomination project in Wayland. The project requires research conducted by volunteers in the community and all research files have been assigned with research already commencing.
Lynn Conrad provided an update on an all volunteer project to save the old Oakland Mills K-Line RR depot that was part of the cafe. The depot has been separated from the other cafe structures and will be moved to a temporary location in the park until a final resting place is designated. He hopes to restore the depot to its original condition with the help of volunteers and donations. The Commission is providing some initial funding to help relocate the depot.
Johanna Crawford and Judy Rawson reported that several fun and interesting events will be held in Swedesburg and Winfield in June so be looking for more information on these events to be forthcoming. The Swedesburg Mid Summer & Museum Anniversary is June 17-18 and a program on WWll will be held June 12 at the Winfield Presbyterian Church. Joel Garretson provided an update on his country school preservation project at East Grove Farms, with major preservation efforts nearly completed.
The next meeting will be June 15 at the Henry County Courthouse.
