Jul. 27, 2022 7:38 pm
The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission met at the court house July 21 with Larry D. Roth, Johanna Crawford, Mary Savage, Pat White, Cathie Shreiner, Judy Rawson and Caroline Lehman in attendance. Larry Roth reported that the NRHP project in Wayland is progressing well. Volunteers are searching old newspapers for interesting information about the town at the time many of these structures were built.
Displayed was the framed certificate and $300 check presented to Joel Garretson in Golden, Colorado for the Commission’s latest book, The Rural Schools of Henry, County, Iowa. The certificate for this national award will be hung in the conference room at the court house. A “special projects award” award for this book was presented to commissioner, Pat White, at the Preservation Summit in Mason City.
Upcoming events taking place at county museums include information on Civil War images by Michael Huston on July 30 at the Henry County Heritage Museum, and a fund-raising breakfast from 8-10 a.m. at the Winfield Community Veterans Building Aug. 7 by the Winfield Historical Society for the restoration of their new museum building.
In September, the Henry County Pioneer Cemetery will host a program at Old City Cemetery at 2 p.m.
The next meeting of the commission will take place Aug. 17 at the Henry County Courthouse.
