Henry County Historic Preservation meets

The Henry County Historic Preservation Commission met Wednesday Nov. 16 at the Henry Co. Courthouse. Attending were Caroline Lehman, Larry D. Roth, Johanna Crawford, Cathie Schreiner, Mary Savage, Judy Rawson, Pat White, and Joel Garretson.
Larry Roth reported that all local research has been completed and submitted to the contract consultant Rebecca McCarley for the Wayland historic residential district nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Pat White is coordinating research for a book on Henry County's cemeteries in a joint project with the Pioneer Cemetery Commission.
Joel Garretson discussed the availability of tax credits and possible grants for restoration and maintenance of 19th and early 20th century barns. The Commission approved a $2,000 expenditure for grading and site preparation for permanently relocating the old Oakland Mills K-Line RR flagstop building at the Oakland Mills Park.
Mary Savage and Cathie Schreiner discussed their recent trip to Luray and Kahoka, Missouri, in continuing their research of slave ownership in Clark County and the freedom seekers who came through Salem. Judy Rawson announced that the Winfield Historical Society & Museum is holding a Holiday Open House & Luminary Stroll on Dec. 17 from 5-7 p.m. Johanna Crawford announced that the Swedish American Museum in Swedesburg is holding a smorgasbord on Dec. 1. The next meeting will be Jan. 18 at the Henry County Courthouse.
