Highland Elementary makers in the making

Highland Elementary students have been pushing the envelope while exploring their creative thoughts and ideas. These unique learning opportunities are made possible through a new space in the elementary called Makerspace.

Makerspace is just that. It is a flexible space that entwines the implementation of the 4 C's (collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking) with the standard curriculum. The space consists of four main zones: construction, technology, sewing, and a production studio. Each zone allows students opportunities to build, design, create, invent, problem solve through use of tools such as iPads, chromebooks, green screens, computer coding, recyclables, Legos, and the list continues to grow.

Highland Elementary has been blessed by an overwhelming amount of community support. Many community members have been instrumental in making their dream of this space a reality. Families have provided multiple donations of supplies to support student learning. Furthermore, as the space was being developed, they found a need for a piece of furniture that hadn't existed yet. The students and staff would like to thank Highland administration, Washington County Riverboat Foundation, and the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council for supporting and funding this incredible adventure, and Riverside and Ainsworth communities for the tremendous amount of support received as they strive towards aspirations of providing the best education to the students.
