Historic preservation workshop coming soon to Mt. Pleasant

The Mt. Pleasant Historic Preservation Commission is inviting residents of Henry County and the surrounding area to a workshop on historic preservation to be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the Iowa Wesleyan University campus in Chadwick Library. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 5, to ensure that adequate materials are available.

Calling all history buffs.
The Mt. Pleasant Historic Preservation Commission is inviting residents of Henry County and the surrounding area to a workshop on historic preservation to be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the Iowa Wesleyan University campus in Chadwick Library. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 5, to ensure that adequate materials are available.
Rebecca Lawin McCarley, of SPARK Consulting, in Davenport, will present the seminar, which will include information on historic tax credits, researching historic properties, and nominating properties to the National Register of Historic Places.
The seminar will be divided into a morning and an afternoon session, with participants invited to attend one or both sessions.
The morning session is the ?Nuts and Bolts of Historic Preservation.? It will focus on an overview of historic preservation, survey projects, and the National Register of Historic Places, with more in-depth information on historic tax credits and historic grants.
The afternoon session is entitles ?Researching and Nominating Historic Properties.? It will focus on more in-depth information on researching a historic property, completing an Iowa Site Inventory form, and developing a National Register of Historic Places nomination.
Participants will leave this workshop with information needed to begin researching a historic property and starting the nomination process.
McCarley has worked on historic preservation projects in Mt. Pleasant and Henry County since 2004, including both National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nominations and historical survey projects. More recently, she completed the nomination for Second Baptist Church, in Mt. Pleasant, which was listed on the NRHP in November 2014. She also is currently working on a reconnaissance level survey project for Jefferson Township, in Henry County.
