BENTONSPORT ? Two open houses are planned for the renovated historic Stone House in Bentonsport.
The first is set from 2-4 p.m. Sunday to recognize the major donors and contractors involved in the renovation.
The second open house is set from 2-4 p.m. May 11 for the general public.
In one year, the Bentonsport landmark has gone from an empty shell to a year-round community center.
In renovating the Stone House, the Bentonsport Improvement Association paid meticulous attention to historically accurate roofing, windows, doors and interior millwork.
A $165,000 grant from Iowa Great Places helped make the renovation possible. Additional grants from Van Buren Foundation, Community Foundation of Van Buren County, the Bentonsport Improvement Association, the William M. and Donna J. Hoaglin Foundation, and private donations covered the rest of the $200,000 total cost.
The building is handicap accessible and includes a kitchen, restrooms and a meeting space for up to 120 people.
Events have already been scheduled at the Stone House, including a quilt show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 24; admission-free Iowa history presentations at 2 p.m. the third Sunday of each month; Village Folk School classes; and wedding receptions.
